Chemistry, Physiology. characterized by equal osmotic pressure; denoting or having to do with a solution containing just enough salt to prevent the destruction of the red blood corpuscles when added to the blood. A solvent isotonic with a solution will not pass through a semipermeable membrane and mix with the solution.
2. Physiology. denoting or having to do with a contraction of a muscle when under a constant tension.
3. Music. having to do with or characterized by equal tones.
